MAKE A DIFFERENCE

With housing prices rising and rental units more scarce, the homeless crisis is exploding in communities across Canada, and the Kootenays are no exception. Hundreds of our community members are struggling to make ends meet, just one unexpected accident, injury or expense away from losing their home.

For some, that event has happened, and they are left to scramble, living in their vehicles, couch-surfing or on the streets… At the worst moment of their lives, they must also face public shaming, discrimination and criminalization. Such negative attitudes profoundly affect their mental health and ability to overcome their situation.

Compassion and respect can help people experiencing housing challenges regain a sense of self-worth. It can ease the fear of asking for help and encourage them to find a better way forward.

We must do more to end homelessness and housing insecurity in our communities. It starts with our will to change.
